Baja California Sur, with its stunning coastlines and rich marine biodiversity, is a true paradise. However, the delicate ecosystems in and around La Paz face numerous threats, ranging from pollution to habitat degradation.
Amidst these challenges, Mar Libre, a non-profit organization, has emerged as a beacon of hope. Committed to marine conservation, Mar Libre employs a multifaceted approach that combines education, community engagement, and regular clean-up initiatives to protect the region’s precious natural assets.
Education for Sustainable Change
Throughout the 8 years since its creation, the group’s directors have understood and communicated the power of consistent environmental education in fostering generational change in attitudes and actions.
In 2023 alone, Mar Libre’s volunteers embarked on an ambitious educational campaign, conducting in-school talks at 33 different schools (including every public school in La Paz!), with 225 sessions reaching an impressive total of 5,418 students. And that was just in one year!

The organization recognizes that an informed community is key to long-term conservation success. By instilling a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the marine environment in the younger generation, Mar Libre lays the foundation for a more sustainable future.
Community Fundraising for a Cause
To support its volunteers in the classrooms, the organization raises funds through engaging community events, including live music concerts and open mic nights at the popular Capuchino Cafe. This vegetarian, organic, and vegan venue not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also supports the crucial work of Mar Libre. Interested parties should keep an eye on the venue’s Facebook page for upcoming events. All profits generated on the indicated nights contribute to the group’s various initiatives.

Monthly Cleanups: Turning Words into Action
Beyond education and fundraising, the organization hosts monthly cleanups, targeting the city’s beaches, mangroves, reefs, and arroyos. On these days, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds come together to remove trash that poses a threat to marine fauna. It’s not only a great way to reduce pollution, but also a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded people.
Participants are advised to bring a reusable water bottle, don comfortable clothing, wear sunscreen, and possibly bring gloves. Mar Libre provides bags, sacks, and jugs of water for bottle refills, as well as organizes support vehicles to haul away tons of bagged trash to responsible processing centers. Find out when the next cleaning event is happening by following their Facebook page, or contacting them at +52 612 154 9859 (no long-distance charges apply if you contact them via WhatsApp)
Mangroves: Guardians of the Coastline
The mangroves, a particularly fragile ecosystem, play a vital role in stabilizing the coastal zone, purifying water, and protecting against erosion. By organizing cleanups in these areas, Mar Libre actively safeguards these critical habitats from the detrimental effects of pollution.

Preserving Pristine Beaches
Undeniably, open beaches are among the most heavily trafficked ecosystems in La Paz. Mar Libre recognizes the immediate threat posed by litter and pollution to the health and safety of both residents and visitors. From injuries caused by discarded bottles to the risks associated with toxic items buried in the sand, maintaining clean beaches is essential for both the environment and beachgoers.
